Band leader James Reese Europe, 36, is killed during a performance in Boston.

The leader of the Harlem Hellfighters, Europe is stabbed backstage by his drummer during intermission of their performance at Mechanics Hall. Europe and his band, which had also served as a decorated machine-gun unit in World War I, had been scheduled to play for Gov. Calvin Coolidge at the State House the next day.
